I found the F – Video Clip – New York City – 02/05
The idea was to create a video clip using only very short clips i did shot with a small digital camera. The challenge was in the short length and bad video quality of the original material. At the end i really like the overall coldness of the thing (The song is “i found the F” by Broadcast).
Soundscape – Tokyo – Yamanote subway line tour – 03/07

This soundscape is something i’ve been dreaming of since my first trip in Japan. The Yamanote line is a circular metro line that follows the limits of the antic “Higher city” where the aristocracy historically lived opposed to the “lower city” where the “little people” lived. The central point of the city being the imperial palace which is still today completely closed to the public. Today the Yamanote line links all major neighborhoods of Tokyo and the complete tour is bit more than one hour long. Millions of people use this line everyday and for a tourist it quickly becomes a central element of any stay in Tokyo. Of course it is convenient, as it is circular you never really get lost but moreover it is 90% an outdoor semi-elevated line which means it offers a wonderful panorama on Tokyo city. For a tourist it is never boring to take this line as your eyes will always catch something new or unexpected. But the pleasure is not only for the eyes but also for the ears. The whole soundscape of the Tokyo subway is amazing. People are very quiet, whether it is in stations, on platforms or in the train itself. Only groups of schoolgirls or foreign tourists usually break the overall quietness of regular commuters. So what is so interesting that it deserves a one hour soundscape ? i say vocal information messages, vocal caution messages, vocal late train excuse messages (this one is not heard very often..), station arrival melodies, station departure melodies, warning sounds, etc… there are never more than 2 minutes passing without a vocal message, a melody or a sound to indicate something. All of this results in a wonderful patchwork of sounds that usually stays in memories of Tokyo visitors.
Actually listening to these sounds many months after coming back home is one of the best way to feel back in Tokyo for a few minutes.
This soundscape comes from a video i recorded on DV in February 2007, from Akihabara station to Akihabara station. The first few minutes are me and buddy François walking for the West gate of the station then waiting for the train to arrive. The the trip begins…
Last but not least, there is a guy constantly making a fuss for about 10 minutes at the beginning, it is not me ! But in japan it is very impolite to blow your nose in public..but ok to make a fuss noisily..talk about cultural differences !
Enjoy !
